The Mercury Tracer never earned high marks for acceleration or handling, but it did prove itself to be a respectable economy car, boasting 35 mpg highway with the base 1.9-liter four-banger mated to the five-speed transmission. Like any relatively modern vehicle, your 1996 Tracer features several components designed to limit emissions. A defective canister purge control valve, while small and simple, will earn you a bucket full of “fail” during an emissions test. The good news is that replacing the canister purge control valve doesn’t require a trip to the shop.
